How will I spend my 1st internship stipend?

As they say, “We feel free when we escape, even if it be but from the frying pan into the fire.”

Couldn’t have appreciated the quote more before this year’s summer internship…but that’s another story.

My stipend for the two months of work is roughly Rs. 50,000. I guess it’s the rush of earning your own bread or maybe the love for my parents, but I have decided not to trouble my dad and pay my institute fees with this money! And with the remaining I intend to buy a gift for my girl on her birthday!

As Einstein says, “No, this trick won’t work… how on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?”

And the first stipend? :)

How will I spend my 1st internship stipend?

With my first stipend, I’d like to take my Mom for a makeover. I know she’ll never spend money on herself but I want to make her feel that even today she looks as beautiful as she used to before. So I’ll be spending it all on her :)

My first stipend will give me hope and inspiration in the future

How will I spend my 1st internship stipend?

14,000 bucks for a second year B. Tech student is like a fortune. At first I decided to spend every penny of it on the things I desired but now after completing 2 months of internship, away from home, working day and night, reading journals, scratching my head for experimental results, etc., I have realised that this sum of money which I got as stipend was very different from what I used to get every month from my father as pocket money, which I spent lavishly without giving it a second thought.

Now I realize what elders used to term “Mehnat ki kamai”. This sounds weird but I am going to deposit the money in a fixed deposit for the next 10 years. Whenever in the future I feel low about being unsuccessful at something I could look at the FD document and regain my hope that if I could be successful at some time in the past, then I could do the same in the future too! Rs. 14,000 , my first stipend, my first hope! :)

I will spend all my internship stipend on myself

Dream designer for internship: – Manish Arora

How will I spend my 1st internship stipend?

Believe me, I don’t know the first thing about embroidery, making patterns on fabric or even cutting fabric in a particular way. Despite my lack of knowledge or expertise in the world of fashion, I find myself in the National Institute of Fashion Technology. I have to sadly begin by saying that I don’t intend to be a designer, because my interests lie in a completely different line altogether. Like most confused young adults of my age, I realized this a little too late. Until I can change my field, I will intern as a designer and learn all that I can in these 3 years.

I’m a dreamer, and I dream big. If I ever get a chance, I will intern with none other than Manish Arora. Not Sabyasachi, not Manish Malhotra, not even Ritu Kumar. It has to be Manish Arora! I don’t know if this gentleman recruits designers annually, nor have I tried to find out if interning with him is at all possible. I’m just guided by the blind belief that if I work with someone like him, I will learn something worthwhile. After all, if I have step into the earner phase, I need to polish my skills and fill myself in with any experience I can get my hands on.

If I do land an internship with Manish Arora and receive my first stipend, I will go crazy. I will spend all the money on myself! I will probably get a hair spa done, or I’ll buy a costly designer dress, or I’ll simply throw a party. BUT I will choose to be selfish with my very first stipend. I’m a hard worker, and my journey to bagging an internship with a prestigious designer is surely not going to be easy. I will have to give up on a lot of comforts, work like a donkey, go without sleep for days together. And after my severe penance and abstinence from the things I love to do, I will finally get to work with my dream designer. So my urge to spend recklessly on myself with my first stipend would not be unjustified.

Achieving anything in life is not easy. Sheer hard work will not get you through your career. Hard work has to be accompanied by other qualities as well. So my only advice to the people who are reading this is: do not ever question your dreams. However unreal, corny and baseless they may seem, your dreams will never fail to motivate you in the worst of times. You just need to believe. Whether it has to do with your first job or first stipend, never cease to believe!

I would use my first stipend to plant lots of trees in my colony

How will I spend my 1st internship stipend?

My college began with lot of hard work. I was among the lucky few who would be doing engineering together, would sit, walk, eat, and share together. Undoubtedly I was in a great college. The only thing that spoiled the picture was the dry barren land which surrounded the college. Sessions started with loads of work, projects and assignments. We would walk during canteen time from our class to the canteen located a few hundred meters away. We were already tired and the walk completely drained us. In the second year, we thought about doing something about it. We planned to plant a variety of trees. It took a year till we started getting earnings of what we did with help of our maali bhaiya. By the third year we could actually see a total turnaround of our campus. Those dear selfless plants and trees which depicted mother Nature’s love were taking care of us with their shadow, flowers and oxygen. They attracted so many birds and squirrels, whose sweet voices my heart can still perceive.

Tomorrow I am going to get Rs. 5000 as my internship stipend. We are moving to a new colony in Indore, probably next month. Why shouldn’t I spend it for the same reason there again? Let me re-live those happy memories again.

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

If you like football at all you know that pre-season starts at the end of July.  Well, I was dating a girl for about 2 years, and I had the opportunity to go do this internship. This would have been the start of a year long internship that was broken into two parts.  The first was 2 months with the San Fransisco 49ers as an Athletic Training intern then 8 months of an Athletic Training intern position at the University of Arizona.  This was going to be a long time apart and I knew we wanted to be together for a long time.

So prior to my internship I proposed.  This made being apart for a long time easier and harder at times, but the nice thing was that my first internship stipend paid off the ring. It also gave me enough money to live for the next 8 months, because I wasn’t getting paid at the University internship.  It has all worked out since then and we just leaped over our third anniversary.  Thanks to that internship we entered a wedding debt-free!

How would I spend my 1st internship stipend?

The summer has brought in one too many changes and is moulding me into a better, friendlier and nicer person. My summer internship has definitely been one of the catalysts in the process. Apart from the tremendous learning opportunities, I feel it has helped me achieve a true sense of perfection and satisfaction in any activity I take up.

Awareness of micro-finance organisations like Milaap always brought a sense of responsibility in me and I felt I could contribute in some way. To loan money and help someone achieve their dreams, well, that is my top priority once I get my stipend. A stipend is a reward of your efforts and this could be well utilized by aiding a stranger get the fruits of his hard work and dedication. And the good part is, it’ll be just a loan and  I would always get the money back. :)
So, this is what I would do with my first stipend. Live and let live!

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

“You will know when you earn yourself,” my Mom said.
“Earn a penny for me and I will remain silent for the rest of my life,” Dad said

These words were a regular dose for me when ever I went out with my friends or for shopping. But I knew, one day God would shower his mercy on me and I did eventually get an internship. A student with an academic record like mine would, under usual circumstances, hardly get a stipend of over 1500 bucks, but I don’t know what the bank officials saw in me that they agreed to pay me 5000 bucks and a thousand bucks as travel allowance.

I didn’t tell anyone anything at home about my internship, because I wanted to surprise them. Then came the day when I got my stipend – a total of 6000 bucks. I now knew what it takes to earn that much; I had sacrificed 2 hours of my morning sleep and 4 weekend trips with my friends and much more. But it was worth it; I felt happier than I had felt when I got a 60 in my house exams without any backs.

Then I went back home and waited for my dad to return from work as I did not want to repeat the same exercise twice for both my parents. As he rang the bell, I rushed out of my room to open the door.

My dad was surprised to see me at the door: it was just 6 and I was home. Then I took his bag and kept it in his room. Then, I just took out 6000 bucks from my pocket and presented it in front of him. He suddenly stood up and asked, staring at me, if I had stolen that money. When he fell silent after few minutes, I presented my internship certificate to him. He had tears in his eyes and so did my mother, it was the first time that they were crying and I was smiling.

Without saying anything he handed me the entire amount and just kept his hand over my head and remained silent. I went and bought jalebis and rabri for dessert, as now even I was the earning man in the family – not the breadwinner but at least I could take care of the dessert!

I spent the rest of it celebrating with my friends and on shopping. I still had some money left over; I silently put it in my father’s savings drawer because his name had helped me get my internship ;)

I shared the joy of my first internship stipend with others

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

I had been offered the job of a choreographer by St. Kabir School for their pre-primary annual concert. It was a huge responsibility. I enjoyed every bit of it — working with students, song selections, costume selections, etc.

Like any other person, even I was excited when I got my stipend. My first earning! I was going bananas all over it. I’d decided to shop till I dropped, but then when I went to the mall I saw two small girls asking for money. They didn’t even have slippers to wear and even their clothes were not proper. Then a little voice inside my head told me to bring a smile on their faces. I went and bought clothes, footwear and candies for them. The glow and smiles on their faces was enough to light up my day!

Sharing your joy with others is definitely a pleasure.

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

I had been selected for the Science Academies Summer Research Programme 2011 in International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi. It was an awesome experience with exposure to high-tech labs with the most sophisticated instruments and up-to-date technology.
Like everyone, I too was excited when I got my first stipend. My first earning! I had been contemplating for a while about how to spend it, and thought of buying a phone, etc. However, as it was a Children’s Day 2 days later I decided to share my joy with my other younger friends. I am associated with the NGO Manavya which works for HIV positive children. So I along with my friends bought around 200 cakes with the Rs. 4000 stipend I had received and had a blast with them. I can definitely say working for humanity gives you more pleasure than any other work in life.

I will buy Kharagpur souvenirs with my first stipend

How will I spend my 1st internship stipend?

With over 2 weeks left for my internship, the stipend still seems distant. That too a miserly sum of 5,000 rupees for 2 months (not to mention the free accommodation and food I enjoyed). But for my 18 year (plus 36 months) old needs, the sum seems lofty enough. Since my first year in college I’d seen seniors and batch-mates alike buying all sorts of Kharagpur souvenirs  like bags, t-shirts, sweats, and in some cases even gifts for their girlfriends. It was in that moment that I decided what I was going do with my internship stipend. I was not going to use my parents’ money for these souvenirs; I was going to buy them with my own. Now with one year left at college and the feeling that I have earned, I know I’ve a lot of t-shirts and bags to buy. Plus a nice sweatshirt by the fest team.

But that would mean I’ll be saving a good amount from my stipend. So what am I to do with it? A part of me asks me to invest it. For the first time I’d have money in my hands and I can nurture it to grow. But I know there are responsibilities as a senior now! Treats for juniors and (dry) parties with friends. I think that would be (more than) enough to drain away my stipend. So that’s going to be the story of my stipend.

Anyway, I need to get back to work now. If someone sees me dreaming about my stipend here, then farewell to my dreams of shirts and treats!

My first internship stipend led to an unsolved mystery and taught me a lesson in prudence

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

“Never spend your money before you have it”–If these words spoken by U.S President Thomas Jefferson were addressed to me, they would have been spent in vain. My first internship was with a boutique corporate finance outfit, RNM and Associates and the idea of receiving my stipend exhilarated me so much that I did exactly what Mr. Jefferson had advised against. To make things worse, my HR manager made me feel like Anton Chekhov’s ‘Yulia’ and a considerable amount (almost half!) was trimmed down for inexplicable reasons. Nevertheless, I still had around 3,200 rupees to spend.
My buddies would have definitely been more merciful if I hadn’t been such a Scrooge all along. Finally, I was able to reason with them; their ‘ridge-tent’ treat was taken care of by Dominoes and a promise of a ‘bungalow’ treat next month. It was a stroke of luck that they missed sight of a newly opened fancy restaurant.
After treating my friends and catering for their sundry demands I was left with the meagre amount of 2,000 bucks which was definitely not sufficient to cover debt owed as well as future expenses. So, cash in hand crumbled from peanuts to small bits of it and debt piled up since I bought some stuff for my younger brother before going home for vacations. I still regret that I was not able to buy anything for my parents and I did not have the faintest idea that the fag end of my mishandled money was destined to be spent for some noble cause.
It was the evening when my last currency note of 500 was lying relaxed dues to my determination of not squandering this time. I bought a packet of chips from an old man who used to sit near the tea shop I usually went to after work. He was my grandfather’s age and found solace in telling me about his family, his grandchildren studying in some distant village in U.P. That day he sounded low. When I asked him, he told me that he was having some trouble hearing and he consulted a doctor at a government hospital. He showed me the prescription. I took him to the chemist and he reckoned up the cost of five day medicine to Rs. 200-250. Then we came back to tea shop where I saw my friend, a journalist. We discussed the situation and decided to defray the expenses. I handed the old man whatever money I had at that time and my friend promised that he’d use his contacts at the government hospital so that his treatment was done properly. I asked the old man to meet me the next day, but he did not come and after my Diwali vacations ended, he kind of disappeared; left me wondering whether something happened to him or he made all that up to cadge some money off me. But I’ve always believed that it is better to err on the side of humanity and benevolence.
Moreover, I learnt a crucial lesson- prudence! I guess readers can put up with a small rhyme here:

“It is for cadgers to learn
Every dime is hard to earn
Else when you will be broke and your heart will burn
Then you’ll yearn, for that wasted penny that was hard-earned.”

How will I spend my 1st internship stipend?

I’m in school and haven’t earned a stipend yet. However, since I love to write, have nothing better to do, and I can’t find any reason not to, I am writing this post.
My first stipend, if you could call it that, will be when I receive a government scholarship later this year, of about a 1000 rupees.
What I plan to do with it is get it laminated, framed — preserved in every way known to the human mind — and hang it on my wall in my house, so that whenever I look at it, I’m reminded of my humble beginnings and also of what a long way I need to cover in order to get another one of those cheques, preferably with a few more zeroes at the end.

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

You know how you always wonder about the day you will receive your 1st paycheck; how you will buy everything you ever wanted but couldn’t; and how you will pamper yourself left, right and centre, since it is your own hard-earned money? Well, my first pay cheque was supposed to be about all that and much more until the time I received it and, boy, the entire logic went upside down!

I got 7000 bucks as my first stipend. Blame it on the entire ‘growing-up’ phase or the sheer love for my folks (or maybe the fact that even I was earning money like them, ha!) that I actually asked my dad to not send me my one month’s house rent amounting to Rs 5000  (yes, yes, it’s all about loving your parents, I know!) and paid it myself.

A whole lot of strategy was involved while spending the balance 2k. Now everyone knows how much I love my dearest sister (and no-one knows that she gave me a brand new Levi’s tee from her own first stipend), brotherhood demanded that I return the gesture (read: favour) and I bought a brand new dazzling UCB tee for her (in sale) for 500 rupees.

Next I decided to get a 500 rupee note signed from my internship mentor and get it laminated as a mark of the start of my corporate journey (come on, it sounds so cool!)

I was finally left with a thousand bucks. I mentally went through the list of things I always wanted to buy; sunglasses, watches, clothes, belt, et al; when suddenly I realised how much I missed my white school shoes (the ones we wore during sports lectures) since wearing those and running was the one thing I hadn’t done ever since I started with my MBA. I went online and ordered a pair of impeccably white Converse shoes with a little red border all around them. They cost Rs 1100 but I got a 150 rupees discount and bagged them for just Rs 950 thereby making a net saving of Rs 50.

I managed to please my parents and my sister, whom all said and done, I love more than my life. I had a cool memento signed by my mentor who was no less cool himself. I was happy with my little white shoes that reminded me of my childhood and I was almost on the verge of opening a savings account with the remaining  Rs 50. It was money well spent!

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

I did my internship with Kshitij Horizons. It is an NGO working towards educating deprived tribal students. I taught the poor kids for 2 months and got Rs.4,000 as stipend. I was tremendously happy as it was my first own salary and wanted to use it in best possible way. But when I returned home for vacations my maidservant told us that a school was being set up in their slums for their kids and asked if we could make any contribution. I immediately handed over 3,500 rupees to her. My mother was surprised. From the remaining 500 I bought a shawl for my mom and she hugged me very tight. It has been one year but I still remember that feeling.

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

It was by a pure stroke of luck that I stumbled upon this competition just a day after I got my first stipend. Earning my first stipend was  a strange feeling for me, maybe stranger than usual because I have already worked and earned a proper salary; but as a student working as an intern, this was my first.
My friends did get the thought of sending across the whole sum, untouched, across to their parents, but noble though the thought was, I abandoned it, seeing that:
1- I had already done something similar with my first salary
2- I wasn’t using their money to sustain myself anymore.
My first stipend had a share of both joy and disappointment.
Joy, because i had a chilled-out time, had fun (not just with friends, old and new) but even at work. I liked the work, I liked the fact that I was doing the ground work, the absolute nitty-gritty of something that will have very tangible outcomes in terms of revenue for the organization. Coming down in formals, toting my laptop and randomly wishing people good morning and good day! Ha! Corporate conformism, how I hated it and took pride in enacting it!
Like a friend pointed out, ‘stipend’ has ‘spend’ written all over it. I spent some of it on mundane requirements like my PG accommodation and the phone bill (I had ended up snagging a girlfriend in the middle of this process, thus :( ), some of the money went to the food guy, and quite a significant proportion in the nearest bar, drinking away mugs after mugs of beer (with similarly endowed friends of course) with the fantastic concept called ‘happy hours’ that let you  have 10 mugs of beer for Rs.300). :) :)
I owed a treat to a friend who lent me his bike at ‘crucial’ times (read , picking up aforementioned girl or avoiding being horrendously late). I settled that debt. And an unspoken debt (treat) to a guy with whom I had crashed for a while, as I looked for suitable accommodation. Settled. The ‘girlfriend bit’ too, did sap a quite a few quid out of the meagre sum-total, but hey, what the hell! ;)
Disappointment because the offer letter quoted a certain sum, but the HR Manager gave some  gyaan about  policy and regulations and gave out a desultory final sum. Being an intern I didn’t really try to raise a row or rock the boat because, after all, we still need them to come down the next year and hire our juniors as well, right?  :)

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

It was a great research experience in TUM, Germany in May 2011. I was awarded a stipend of 2000 euros (roughly 1 lakh INR) for two months of stay in Munich. I spent a considerable amount of money in making trips to Switzerland, Italy, France and Germany. About 600 euros were spent on buying grocery and other items of daily need. But I never spent my cash unnecessarily on purchasing things which were insignificant. At the end of my stay, I saved nearly 700 euros and returned it to my parents. They were really happy to know that I had managed money efficiently and saved a considerable sum. This experience made me believe that I could live independently and manage my own expenses in the future.

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

I got my stipend after a lot of hard work and weeks of toiling away in the Delhi summer and rains! So I knew what it was worth. Before that I was also part of a social responsibility project and was associated with an NGO called Vishram Vridh Ashram. I saw there with my own eyes how certain people were working really hard to cure and care for abandoned parents. I therefore decided to give away a part of my time and money for that NGO, as it really was working for a most noble cause. I deposited part of the rest of my stipend in my bank account and tried to cover up for the expenses incurred during my internship. I think it was the best thing to do at that time, and today I don’t for one moment regret my decisions.

I earned 3000 bucks by doing some offshore work on building acoustics.
I spentsome of it to buy groceries , so that for once I could get the feel of being the man of the house; till then I always felt like useless entity on planet Earth. Also I treated my Mom and Dad at a 5-star restaurant as I always wanted to make them proud (or atleast feed my Ego that i could treat them with my meagre earnings!)
And the rest was spent in gifting chocolates to the children of my building’s watchman as I love putting a smile on faces; and no wonder the naughty kids had a wild sheepish grin on their faces with the glow of a CFL bulb–that was priceless!

How did I spend my 1st internship stipend?

I remember spending my first stipend on dinner with my friends. All I can recall is that, we all went for a movie in the evening and then we celebrated at my rented flat with alcohol served in wide glasses along with chilled water and ice. I thought I would be left with some money to buy some gifts for my parents and my sibling, but in the morning i woke up with empty pockets and empty beer bottles lying around. :D
I never got to know what I did with the money left that night!
Later I bought a few gifts for family, spending my savings and not my stipend.
But some things in life come only once, all that you refer to as ‘first’ and you need to welcome them with celebrations, to create moments you can remember all your life–just like I did with my first stipend. :)
