Women our mom’s age who believe they are held hostage by spirits for over 16 years. Women our age, who have been raped thrice before they attained puberty. Women who have been assaulted and harassed for the first 40 years of their life. Earlier, by uncaring fathers and later by brutal husbands. Women our grandmother’s age with brain capacities and understanding similar to that of six year old kids. Women, who forget often. Women, who behave strange in a lot of occasions. Children who lost their senses and balance in an accident which consumed their parents have grown into women now. These are women who merely exist today. They used to live once.

I could not hold back my emotions when I got my Internship confirmation. To work with one of the largest Pharmaceutical companies in the Financial Capital of the world would be a dream come true for any graduate. Just thinking about the fact that I would be spending the next six months in New York made me excited to the core. As time passed, I packed my bags and starting getting nervous as I never had been out on my own before. It was my first job and that too in a place totally alien to me.

I used to travel 40 minutes in metro and 20 minutes walk to reach G.Ram Hospital. I interned under the clinical psychologist. On my first day I wore the proud jacket and entered the  hospital premises. My first day as an intern was also my first day to travel alone in metro. Oh, how much I loved that hustle. I was mesmerized by the feeling of individuality. I, a shy, introvert & homely girl, was actually out, alone and making sense of routes despite my bad cognitive maps.

Having interest in fundamental research, I could not apply whole heartedly to the initial companies that came to the campus for internship projects. So I waited with positive outlook for a company that would be relevant to my area of interest. And my wait was over when the Aditya Birla Group (Textile Research And Development Centre) registered for the selection process. Being in the top 3 of the departmental strength of above 50 students, I felt happy to get the opportunity. Entering the green campus, it instilled in me the enthusiasm to work. I spent my first week at Kharach township in Gujarat for my induction process. Seeing my interest in basic sciences I was asked to join A.B.S.T.C , situated in Mumbai, which was more of a fundamental research centre that was equipped with the state-of-the art analytics facilities and modern technology equipments.

Getting an internship for a small grade college student who does not have contacts in the companies or with the professors is very difficult. The same happened with me. I applied to all the IITs for Summer Research Intern but was rejected everywhere even though I have done work in my field (Robotics) before. I was quite disappointed because nobody was evaluating my knowledge and what I had done. Just because of the college name and with no recommendations I was not able to get any internship. Then once I thought why only IITs or big brand companies? The soul purpose of the internship is to learn and I should go to the place where I can learn more. The best way I found is to go to the start up companies there you can get the proper guidance as well as the work. So I started looking at the start up companies which is working in Robotics.

Schlumberger has a rigorous selection procedure (which becomes blatant when you realize that they selected four students out of almost all departments that applied from IIT D). They short listed resumes, conducted group discussions and finally had personal interviews that ran past midnight. It was early in the morning when we were told that we had made it!.

Nothing in the world could be rocket science, not even Investment Banking!

In B-schools, Finance has always been the most coveted industry to land jobs in, especially by the top brains on campus; it is hence, a misconception that it is extremely arduous to tame. Having had an engineering background and 3.5 years of experience in the IT space and hence no exposure to the Financial world, I too opined the same. Read more…

My internship @ The Hindu was a luxury experience!!

Although I did not get any stipend, the events which I covered as a reporter were enough to compensate. From Page3 parties to book launches, I covered it all. Pick and drop facilities were provided by the event management companies. They offered gifts to pamper the reporters so that the ‘poor learners’ give an interesting piece the next day in the newspaper. Read more…
