About the Author: Himanshu Dangi, from Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS), takes us through his exciting journey as a marketing and sales intern at U2opia Mobile Private Limited.
As a student of PGDM Marketing, it is very important where you land up at your summer internship. Many times a summer internship changes your whole career. It gives you so much insight into the industry where you want to pursue your career. I feel blessed that I got an internship at U2opia Mobile Private Limited, which focuses on practical learning rather than plain theoretical knowledge.
Around 3 or 4 months before the start of my summer internship, I started checking out all the renowned companies which hire summer interns. I prepared a list according to my preferences. I thoroughly checked their websites and specifically the careers page. The most important thing before sending a mail to a company is preparing a very crisp and professional cover letter to which your resume would be attached. Both the cover letter and resume should be given utmost importance while preparing. Choice of words and the overall presentation matters a lot.
After preparing a cover letter and my resume, I sent a mail to U2opia Mobile Private Limited for seeking a place as a summer intern. They responded very quickly which was around 3-4 days after my email. I had a telephonic interview which was followed by a personal interview. Both the interviews went very well. Questions asked during the interview were regarding my strengths and weaknesses, and my commitment towards work. Finally, after a week I got a call from U2opia Mobile Private Limited confirming my success in the interview. I was ecstatic!
Utopia Mobile is a 5-year old company dealing with mobile solutions that helps small, mid, and high scale startups. Their success within such a short time is very inspiring and shows how dedicated the people are in the organization. I was given the role of “Inter-Sales and Marketing”. There was a proper plan prepared for the whole 2 months of my tenure. Initial two days were orientation where I got to know about the important people in the organization, about the work process, and about the product department that I would be working on.
The real work began from the third day. For the first two weeks, I was assigned a mentor and all the work that I was given was scrutinized by him. The work as a sales guy involved cold calling the prospects, inbound marketing, visiting startup expos, and generating leads. I went to numerous meetings with my mentor to get an idea about pitching the product to a prospective customer. After the grilling two weeks training, I was given the freedom to work the way I wanted to. Every alternative day, I had to arrange around 5-6 meetings from my own research and lead generation of prospects. The real practical learning began from that moment when you are all alone representing your company and the clients are bombarding you will all sorts of questions. It was really an exciting journey, and I learned a lot.
We used to have sales meeting twice a week to check the progress we had made. Difficulties faced by us during pitching the product was also heard and dealt with. Views of the clients towards our product was taken as a feedback. Competitor’s product was also analyzed. Finally, the required improvement in strategies while approaching a client was also discussed. I also got to work on social media marketing and email marketing which was a great experience.
The culture within the organization is amazing. The seniors and the permanent employees are very helpful. One of the most amazing things which I liked about the organization was that they made me feel like a permanent employee and not just an intern. Every intern had a say in the organization, and my ideas and views were given equal importance. I believe this openness has made U2opia Mobile Private Limited grow so fast in such a short time.
