Internship at Volvo Eicher – Akshay from UBS Panjab University
We never know who we are until we push ourselves beyond the limit. Akshay gave his best shot and made the best use of each opportunity.
It was in January, I along with my friends had participated in a management competition of virtual bidding. I received a call in the middle of the event. The round of questions started. Introduce yourself, Why Volvo, our previous year’s sales. I gave her the answers. She asked me “How would I promote the brand”. This was the question I couldn’t satisfy her with my answer. She then moved on to mechanical engineering. After few questions, she bade me best of luck and disconnected the call. I resumed the event.
Everything was normal and within a week I got the confirmation call that I was chosen for the internship. I got the exports department with marketing profile. It was the best possible thing that could have happened to me as it was not expected.
I started my training in the first week of May. I met the HR, who showed me the corporate presentation of the company along with other interns from good B-schools. I was introduced to the vice president in the afternoon and he assigned me the job and my mentor, who was also the Head of international sales.
My project was to analyse the competitors in African and Middle East markets according to their distribution network and deciding the countries suitable for VE to enter into or expand the current operations. My mentor was kind enough to introduce me to the whole department. The work culture was fantastic as the people started giving me suggestions to go with the project. The different teams gave me inputs related to the markets, I was targeting.
In addition to this I used to attend the meetings of different teams dealing in sales, marketing and aftermarket to discuss the problems and their solutions in tackling the problems. First time in my life I worked for 20 hours straight and continued the hard work till the end. I was interested in learning from the opportunity and also get myself a pre-placement offer.
I could interact with industry leaders, students from different B-schools and CEO Siddhartha Lal also. I remember wishing him greetings in the staircase usually in the morning. Finally, the day came when I had to present the project in front of VPs and HR’s. Though I was bit nervous but everyone came out satisfied, with putting a smile. I am still in touch with many of my colleagues and will always cherish this opportunity.
