CA Articleship by day and content writing by night – Here’s how I found my true calling
About the Author: Arpita Gujrati is pursuing B.Com from Lucknow University. She shares how her content writing internship with Word-O-Net Writing Studio helped her discover her true calling.
After clearing my exams, as a part of the curriculum of chartered accountancy, I was required to join a training as an articled assistant. I had very mixed feelings about it and very little desire to excel at it. One fine day, I was checking my inbox and fortuitously found a mail that changed everything.
I got to know about a content writing internship at Word-O-Net Writing Studio from Internshala and applied for it. They were looking for someone with a flair for writing and I replied – “For a writing enthusiast, it will be a dream come true if she gets more readers for her writing. Some additional money will not hurt either.” But honestly, I wasn’t an enthusiast till then, and I hadn’t written anything substantial before that except some good articles in my exams to impress my teachers. As a part of selection process, I had to write on a specific location of OYO Rooms which was Civil Lines, Bareilly.
Marking the start of my internship, I received a mail with all the details of the internship and the guidelines regarding the timelines for submissions and training that they were going to provide. I agreed to the terms and asked them the details of the training. After this, I searched on every possible site to collect material and compile my second ever write-up. This time it was not for marks, but for that smile of finally being able to write for myself.
During the 30 days of my internship, I had to write articles on five topics every day, based on OYO Rooms. I wrote for different locations – sometimes beautiful, sometimes commercial, once my own city, and sometimes those that I didn’t even recognise. Once they gave me this mesmerizing place in South India that very few North Indians have even heard about. I researched about it for half an hour to do justice to it. It is funny how the gizmo in my hand suddenly felt the world to me and, thank God, for all the good reasons. Some of the locations that I worked on during the internship were OMR Chennai, Tambaram Chennai, Alwarpet Chennai, Poonamalle Chennai, GST Chennai, Fort Aguada Road Goa, Calangute Goa, Majorda Goa, and Arambol Goa. I travelled to these places virtually and didn’t stop until I got my personal favourite write-up of the day. I read it over and over again to get that feeling of satisfaction when I went to sleep.
Every day, after working for someone else, I worked for myself until mid-night. Some days, my father used to wake up and beg me (literally!) to go to sleep and in return, he would transfer the amount equal to my stipend in my bank account. During those nights through that computer screen, I was following my own passion and not someone else’s direction. From being an early enthusiast to getting hired by my elder sister as her ‘personal’ content writer, I felt proud as now my elders didn’t recognise me by my rebel attitude but by the words I wrote. The day my younger sister said she idolised me, I knew I had touched some innocent souls too.
The month ended and so did my internship. One thing led to another and I got a chance to work with another company, Nettv4u where I wrote about legends of Hindi and parallel cinema. Soon, I got a mail from my previous company to re-join. By just being in my house, I was travelling all over India and creating memories that I would write about one day. That day I realised I was writing my own success story.
Thank you, Internshala, for providing me the opportunity to unearth my hidden potential. Now I’m confident about my writing ability and know what I want to pursue further.
