Caltech Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Prorgram – All Branches & Streams- Caltech, USA
Caltech’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships program (SURF) is now accepting applications for Summer 2013 program. SURF introduces students to research under the guidance of seasoned research mentors at Caltech where students experience the process of research as a creative intellectual activity. Please note that the program is open to International students also (limited funding) and first year students may apply too. The program is open to students from various streams (Engineering, Arts etc.) The last date to apply is 22nd February, 2013 – hurry!
About Internship: – SURF is modeled on the grant-seeking process. Students must identify and contact a mentor and collaborate with the mentor to develop and define the research project. This early interaction is a very important part of the application process. Non-Caltech students usually have to accomplish this discussion via e-mail, phone, or fax.
- Students collaborate with potential mentors to define and develop a project
- Applicants write research proposals for their projects
- A faculty committee reviews the proposals and recommends awards
- Students carry out the work over a 10-week period in the summer, mid-June to late August
- At the conclusion of the program, they submit a technical paper and give an oral presentation at SURF Seminar Day, a symposium modeled on a professional technical meeting
To identify a potential mentor, students can either look at Announcement of Opportunity where different faculty have posted their research projects for summer or can directly contact a faculty at Caltech in an area that is of interest to the student. Detailed information on how to identify a mentor and entire application process can be found at SURF-Information for Non-Caltech students
