Direct and Indirect Speech

In this article of English with Internshala series, we will concentrate on the basics of direct and indirect speech in the English language. With the help of selected YouTube videos, you’ll learn how to effortlessly convert direct speech into indirect speech. But, before you do that, take this quick quiz to test your understanding and see where you stand.

Direct speech, also known as quoted speech, involves saying exactly what someone has said. It involves quotation marks. (Ex.- She said, “I’m eating Pizza.”)

Indirect speech (or reported speech), on the other hand, doesn’t involve quotation marks to enclose what the person said and it doesn’t have to be exactly the same. (Ex.- She said she was eating Pizza.)
