An overview of Dish TV internship program with Mr. Ashutosh Mishra, VP-HR
Dish TV, a division of Zee Network Enterprise, is Asia’s largest Direct to Home television operator. Internshala caught up with Mr. Ashutosh Mishra, VP-HR, to know how much of a part does their internship program play in making them the brand that they are. Excerpts –
Hi Ashutosh. Welcome and thank you for this interview. Could you please provide us an overview of the internship programs at Dish TV?
Hello! Glad to be here. Our internship program intends to give students the opportunity to gain practical, challenging and meaningful on-the-job work experience.
DishTV internship program has been more than seven years old and we provide internships in Marketing, Broadcast Operations & Engineering, Technical, Secretarial and Legal, Sales, Finance, Human Resources, and Information Technology. The internship duration varies for a period of 2 months to maximum of 15 months, depending upon the project duration and the requirement of the related course. This year we intend to hire about 300 interns pan-India
What qualities do you look for in an intern and what methods do you employ to hire them?
Below are some of the attributes that are a must –
- Committed disciplined individuals with quick learning ability
- Ability to understand the problem statement and apply research orientation to generate solutions
- Should have interpersonal skills to work cohesively within limited time-frame
- Should know Excel, PowerPoint, Research tools to aid project work
Till last year we visited MBA colleges in and around Delhi-NCR region to hire interns. But this year, if anyone wants to intern at Dish TV then s/he could mail his/her CV at hr@dishtv.in (check this link here) or at shiwali_a@dishtv.in, we will respond accordingly. The applications are open till the end of May this year. As further process, after candidates are shortlisted on basis of resume, interviews (telephonic or face-to-face on basis of location of candidate) are taken by our panel. The main objective of the interview is to ascertain that the interests of the candidate align with the projects we have and if s/he will be a cultural fit to the organization.
What kind of roles/projects are interns given?
Projects that we provide are a mix of primary and secondary research relevant to the domain of product and DTH industry. The projects/roles also depend on the stream the interns belong to. For example, interns in Broadcast Operations & Engineering department are from various engineering streams like BE in Telecommunications , Instrumentation, Electronics, etc.
Do you remember any particular project where interns played a critical role?
The interns associated with us in various departments have been great value adds.
- Marketing Interns did some brilliant work that led in boost of Movie on Demand feature.
- Broadcast Operations & Engineering interns where great contributors to the integration of our automation project and recently to the TEN SPORTS migration.
- At the time of digitization in metro cities, interns did a very good work in providing the last mile connect
In your opinion, what are the top 2 or 3 mistakes that interns generally commit and you would like to warn a prospective intern about?
At times interns make the following mistakes that should be completely be avoided –
- Interns should take the serious approach towards their project. Their work and efforts affect the company’s output.
- Interns hurrying into the completion of project reports part only and paying less heed to its practical application
- Not sticking to timelines due to the long duration of internship
How has the company benefited from the internship program?
Internship program helps the organization get some out of the box ideas from young ignited minds. It also helps identify some good resources who are bright and can be considered for PPO.
