Reading & Writing Assignment (10) – The Role Model
And here we are on the last assignment of the series. Yes, we did it! Feels awesome, right? :)
What will you do in this assignment? – You would read about an interesting event, watch a video on it, and then answer a question based on those. This assignment is an overdose of inspiration and can end up giving you serious life goals :)
Today’s situation (source):
In a country obsessed with cricket, other sports often feel neglected and don’t get the due attention. Further, our focus in India has always been on doing well in studies and sports is considered a mere hobby at best or a distraction at worst. No wonder, for a nation of 1.2 billion and a contingent of 100+ sports persons, India’s medal tally at Olympics usually has only a medal or two to show.
However, not all hope is lost. Even lesser known than our Olympics athletes and their performance is our athletes’ performance in Paralympics (the equivalent of Olympics for athletes with physical disabilities). In 2016, at Rio Paralympics (organised right after Rio Olympics), Indian contingent had 19 athletes and it won 4 medals (2 Gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze). Devendra Jhajharia and Mariyappan Thangavelu won gold in javelin throw and high jump events respectively. Deepa Malik won silver in shot put event and Varun Singh Bhati won bronze in the men’s high jump event.
This assignment is our attempt to recognise these heroes, to thank them for inspiring us, to give them a place in our collective memories, and to make them known to younger generations to come. And if you think that just because these are Paralympics, the performance of the athletes would be sub-par or the excitement levels would be low, you are in for a surprise. In 1500 meters race at Paralympics 2016, even the 4th place finisher ran faster than the Gold medal winner of the same event in the Olympics game (source). And as far as excitement levels are concerned, watch the video below –
Question for you– Who is your role model (could be from Sports or any other walk of life) and why so? What is it about that person that inspires you and what qualities of that individual you admire the most? Write your answer in the comments section below (minimum 200 words).
You can also read fellow students’ answers in comments (but do so only after you have submitted your own answer so that you don’t get influenced by what others wrote). We also encourage you to share your feedback, appreciation and thoughts against others’ answers. Remember, it is a community effort and we are all in it together :). Only when you participate, you can expect others to participate and share feedback on what you wrote. Deal?
Parting note – While this series of reading and writing assignment ends here, we hope it is only a comma and not a full stop in your endeavor to develop the habit of reading a page and writing a paragraph every day. Continue practising on your own, with your friends, online etc. and develop your communication skills further – one day, you would thank us for this advice :). Till then, adios!
