The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB), though needs no introduction, is one of the fifteen higher institutes of technology in the country set up with the objective of making facilities available for higher education, research, and training in various fields of science & technology. With the same mission and vision, Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan, CSE Dept, IITB, is gearing to take rural India a leap ahead. We have multiple projects under Prof. Ganesh like Vialogues – a video-based knowledge sharing platform, Lokacart – an e-commerce platform for creating a cohesive relationship between farmers and consumers, etc. for which we have been hiring interns. We hire interns for various profiles like web development, mobile app development, project management, IT technical recruitment, quality analysis, software testing, machine learning, UI/UX design, video editing, etc.
It has been a fantastic experience working with interns. Interns with their bright ideas and hard work have made a remarkable contribution to these projects. They come with an open mind, enthusiastic approach, and are full of energy. Their contributions help the projects move faster and the team can deliver better quality within the stipulated period of time. Interns also get a fabulous learning experience in terms of technical knowledge, management, teamwork, and communication skills to name a few.
While hiring interns, we follow the ASK formula (Attitude, Skills, and Knowledge). We have streamlined a process for hiring – we first discuss the requirement with the respective team manager and prepare a job description. Accordingly, we post the internship requirement on Internshala. After shortlisting the applicants whose interest, experience, and skill sets match our requirements, we make an initial call to try and understand the motivation behind their interest to pursue an internship with us. We also clarify the roles and expectations to the candidates and brief them about the interview process. After providing their confirmation over email about the availability, stipend, their capability to manage their own accommodation in Mumbai, etc., the candidates go through an initial telephonic technical round. For some roles, an additional Skype round is also organized. The shortlisted candidates are then asked to submit an NOC from their college before they are invited for a face-to-face round. This final round starts with a reasoning and technical test, followed by a personal interview. In the end, an open session is conducted where our projects are showcased to all the candidates and they are encouraged to ask questions. The selected interns are sent an offer letter and after a few formalities, their internship begins. We also provide study material to help them get better equipped with the work before they start.
Depending on the profiles they are hired for, interns handle varied responsibilities like:
• Server handling and website hosting
• Writing well-designed, testable, efficient code through best software development practices
• Creating website layout/user interface by using standard HTML/CSS practices
• Integrating data from various backend services and databases
• Gathering and refining specifications based on technical needs
• Creating and maintaining software documentation
• Project coordination, presentation, and recruitment
• Back office work (accounts, HR, PRO, logistics and dispatch, drafting, communication, data management, etc.)
• Managing events and field visits
This internship helps facilitate a learning atmosphere for all those students who have the zeal to learn, push their limits, and excel in whatever they do. It also equips them to accept challenges that may come in their future career path be it in the field of higher education or corporate world. Interns are awarded a certificate at the successful completion of the internship, and those who perform exceptionally well are also provided with a Letter of Recommendation (both online and offline) to help in MS admissions or while interviewing for a job.
