How I hacked into my College LAN
About the author: Rajat Mittal is pursuing B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing from IIT BHU. He recounts his experience with Internshala’s Hacking training and how it helped him in becoming a competent hacker.
I used to watch various movies and T.V. shows in which some really cool and intelligent people hacked into the highly secure systems with just a few clicks and codes on their computer screens. That was the time, I developed an interest in hacking. I was very keen to become a great hacker myself. But, unfortunately, I couldn’t find any study material or a good offline course. Even in my college, there were no subjects that dealt with Ethical Hacking. On the internet too, while searching for free resources, I could find only some pretty basic stuff. One day, I was just checking my emails when I came across a mail about Internshala’s training programs and saw a program on hacking. I took a demo and was excited to get enrolled. It was like a dream come true! I chose a suitable time slot and started learning from the comfort of my home.
The program started from the scratch. The way in which it was presented was simply awesome. They first covered the Web basics which contained insights about HTTP, JavaScript, servers, etc. It was fun to know more about the things which we use in everyday life. Day by Day my knowledge started to expand, and I couldn’t help but feel a tinge of pride at learning the very fundamentals of hacking. Then, I came to know about the vulnerabilities of the systems and various attacks which the hackers perform. I exploited the vulnerability of a dummy website provided during the program and hacked into it. There was a dummy website, a link of which was given in the program, and we were supposed to apply all the skills we had learned in the tutorials. The best part was they didn’t just teach the theoretical stuff but also practically demonstrated each and every attack and trick. Moreover, the feeling you get when you apply the knowledge which you have gained to build (hack) something on your own is just amazing!
Another impressive aspect of this program is the inclusion of comprehensive quizzes at the end of every module. These quizzes are the keys to unlock the next modules. They provide a push to procrastinators like me to complete the tutorial and evaluate my learning. Links to more advanced tutorials were also provided which further helped me. I even learned how to hack a LAN! Excited by this, I hacked into the LAN of my entire hostel in college by just exploiting a little vulnerability. As a result, the LAN of our hostel is more secure now as the authorities fixed the bug and thanked me for identifying it. So cool, right!
Mentors were also provided to respond to student queries. Every day, there was a one-hour long live chat with the experts to clarify our doubts. Also, if I had any doubts or faced any problems, I could post it in the forum and the experts would reply within 24 hours!
Being a hacker is a lot of fun, but it takes the same amount of efforts too, if not more. Such efforts need motivation which, in turn, is provided by the organized teaching and constant support from Internshala. As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. I feel more secured on the internet now and always try to explore the vulnerabilities of the websites I visit and contribute to the open source projects, thereby making the internet a safer place.
I sincerely thank Internshala team for making the internet more secure and intriguing for me. I will never forget the knowledge I learned by doing the Ethical Hacking training on Internshala.
