My journey of overcoming code-o-phobia
About the Author: Saumyajit Samanta is pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science from Kalyani Government Engineering College. He joined Internshala Trainings for Programming with C & C++ training and shares how he finally overcame his code-o-phobia.
Prologue:
Being a Computer Science and Engineering student myself, it may sound a tad awkward that one year ago, when I was a sophomore, I was not comfortable with programming. I faced difficulties even with the basic programming languages like C and C++. Maybe the limited opportunities available back at school were to blame, but I had started to feel isolated and also overly concerned about my future. The menace started when we stepped into the second semester of college and a subject about Programming in C language was introduced. I couldn’t even write the easiest programs and codes asked in exams, let alone the competitive programming contests my classmates were excelling in. I couldn’t share my problem with anyone, thanks to the fear of being embarrassed before my friends. Soon, all my friends started enrolling for various vocational training programs and internships whereas I was still busy figuring out how to write a line of code beyond #include<stdio.h>. This went on until I realized that I needed to put an end to this problem. However, by then, it looked like I was already too late as my friends were signing up for courses like Advanced Java after finishing Core Java, and I was yet to master C and C++. I didn’t want to join my friends and embarrass myself and also waste my parents’ hard earned money at the exorbitantly priced training and certification programs. That was the same time, I came across Internshala website as my friends used it for finding internships. However, all I could see was the required skill set for the internships in which I was seriously lagging behind.
The First Sight:
While browsing on the site, I stumbled upon the Trainings section. I was delighted to see the presence of a C/C++ course here and that too at such a reasonable cost. I instantly decided to register and have never felt better about taking a decision.
The Journey:
I did the training during my summer break. When my friends came to know they discouraged me saying there is no need to pay for an online training when I could simply compile video lectures from various sites and YouTube channels for free. However, I was convinced that I needed someone to guide me as I had tried all those tricks earlier and had failed. The training program was split into four strategically crafted modules with a test in the form of a quiz at the end of each module. The quiz is totally instrumental in brushing up the skills learned and must be cleared to proceed to the next module. The videos were quite descriptive as well. Our mentor, Mr. Santanu Karmakar, had been amazing throughout the training and helped us a lot.
All the queries posted online were resolved promptly and so there were no backlogs in understanding crucial concepts. The outstanding support which was given, substantially helped me improve my skills. The questions asked in the tests and quizzes were highly conceptual and required students to understand and apply intricate details. If someone is sincere throughout the training, there’s nothing to worry about the exam at the end.
Epilogue The new beginning:
Now, the guy who was afraid of those dreadful lines of code can stand with his head high and confidently code programs at par with all those people who once mocked him. Thank you, Internshala, for helping me battle my fears and conquer them. I’m no longer haunted by Code-o-phobia. Time may rampage everything you have but your memories, experience, and learnings always stay with you. And, so, I’m again thankful to Internshala for this experience and knowledge.
