How I conquered my fear of programming
About the Author: Sanika Kulkarni is pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science from Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology, Pune. She recounts how she came across Internshala Trainings for doing Web Development training and how she finally conquered her programming phobia.
My journey with Internshala Trainings can be compared to a typical Mumbai local train ride. Both require a push to start, followed by a bumpy start, and then a smooth and timely finish with the satisfaction of reaching the destination.
I was browsing for paid internships to earn some quick bucks in holidays when I came to know about Internshala. It was here that I first applied for internships. Now, there are two types of internships for any engineering student- technical and non-technical. Non-technical includes all kinds of internships like marketing, content creation, content writing etc. I found out that I was eligible for these internships and started applying. I was overjoyed when I was shortlisted and selected for a couple of them. The technical internships, however, mattered more to me, but after seeing the required criteria, I was discouraged. All of them required skills like Web development, Android app development, UX development, and knowledge of languages like Python etc. Now, if you are in any normal second or third tier college like mine, you will know that we don’t have these courses in our syllabus. There are many coaching centers which teach these courses, but traveling is next to impossible in cities like Pune if you don’t own a vehicle. And, I used to be so exhausted after my classes that I hardly had any energy left to do all the traveling. That was when I thought of online training programs and discovered Internshala Virtual Training Center.
I joined the Web Development training. I wanted to learn it since last 3 months but never mustered the courage as I always thought it must be way too complicated. I saw the demo video and then checked out the reviews and FAQs. The thing that attracted me the most was the promise of developing a fully functional e-commerce website in just 6 weeks. (And that too without any previous knowledge of programming!)
The entire training was divided into modules. The modules were locked which was beneficial as it allowed a structured progress. The next module was unlocked only after passing the tests at the end of the previous module. I’m not good with my time-management and was worried about completing the training. But voila! That problem was solved the moment I saw the training introduction which gave us a reference table about the number of hours we should ideally allocate to different topics. That served as a deadline for me. And I wasn’t bound to those deadlines; I changed them depending upon my mid-term schedules and assignment due dates. The tutorials were comprehensive, and the quizzes were fun. Each of them had snippets of codes which one could try and see the output, making it a practical session.
The support team was simply amazing and solved the queries pretty fast. I got the ideal solution for my final project and all the materials could be downloaded in PDF format for future reference. In the end, there was an exam which I had to pass to get my certificate. I also had the option of letting the score be printed on my certificate, and it could be attached to my LinkedIn profile as well.
As I said earlier, my journey was similar to a train ride. It provided me the much-needed push to start working on my skills and following deadlines. The excellent support team gave me the solutions whenever I needed them, making it a smooth journey. And, finally, it helped me conquer my fear of programming and made me eligible for technical internships i.e. took me to my destination.
