Internship at Ogilvy and Mather Advertising – Shreya from Sophia College for Women
There is no key to success, just we need to be persistent and work hard to mark our name in the field. Shreya who is an undergrad, took little steps to enter in this ever competitive ad world and enjoyed the thrill. She learnt that failure is never a failure, but another step away from success.
My summer vacations gave me the exciting opportunity to work with one of the best ad firms in the country, Ogilvy and Mather. Located in the posh Oberoi building in Goregaon, Mumbai. This internship surely taught me what it actually meant to be competitive and the best in the field you desired to bag a job in. I would describe my first day as one filled with curiosity, confusion, nervousness and a wee bit of excitement. The advantage for me was that I knew how an ad agency works. But this was actually seeing and experiencing it. It’s beautiful how so many different departments come together to create something that we call a commercial.
My internship was in the client servicing department. This department essentially helps build the bridge between the creative team i.e the team that comes up with all the ideas for the perfect commercial and the client i.e the brand that needs an advertisement for their product or service. So from organizing all the meetings, to keeping the clients updated on the progress of the work, facilitating communication between the two groups, relaying the demands of the clients– In Toto, act as the medium of communication.
I had the pleasant opportunity of working for the Dove Hair care brand. I was assisting the Group account manager for the brand in Mumbai. My work typically involved getting Art works made, getting errors rectified, getting the work redone over and over because clients are never satisfied with what is being done. Although it may sound like a meagre job, it was everything but that. You truly understand the importance of assertiveness and the need to keep deadlines, when you are an intern with an ad firm where people refuse to listen to you and that attitude in turn could in fact be detrimental to the progress of the project at hand. I think I can safely say that this experience of having to deal with non-adjusting and incorrigible people was the worst I had at O&M. From initial preparation for the project, to the vast amount of work that goes in to make the campaign a success, I’ve seen it all.
But like they say, everything is an experience to teach us something that is worth much more. So Yes, I had these little issues while interning there, but overall my experience was one I will cherish forever.
