Internship at University of New South Wales – Sarthak from IIT Kharagpur
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Sarthak is pursuing Civil engineering and shares his memorable experience of internship days.
To start with, I extend heartfelt gratitude to Internshala. I was able to have such a wonderful experience because of their portal. I saw the form on their website on 28th February, 2015 while the deadline was on the 2nd March, 2015. I filled up the form and submitted in a jiffy. Within a week, I heard from the university about being accepted. I was instantly filled with relief. In such competition, having to get what you like is as good as a miracle.
Coming to the experience, well it was like a vacation. Away from the scorching Delhi sun, I was in a coastal city in the midst of Southern Hemisphere winters. It was literally chilled out. As far as the work experience is concerned, I had an amazing time. The Australian dream is hard to take to but once you are in it, nothing seems better. My work was in the area of structural engineering. Talking about details, it was finite element modelling of steel-concrete composite decks. Academically and professionally, this was more than I could have asked for. I learnt a lot of new stuff and was part of cutting edge research. Other than the work, I met people from around the world. It was my first trip abroad. Fortunately, it being an English-speaking nation, I didn’t face any such problems. My housemates were from Spain, Italy, Brazil, Cuba, Japan, Columbia. We had a lovely cultural exchange.
Sydney is a wonderful city. You will fall in love with the weather the moment you step there. Coastal breeze and light sunshine; seems right from the books. The only downside was that the expenses were too much. Everything seems out of pocket. In general the stipend that you get is barely enough to survive. Survival was done on cooking food by myself. I recommend everyone to go for such an experience and always check Internshala for updates on latest interns. You never know what you might just get.
