What students have to say: – Apurva Pathak who is in his final year of B. Tech in the Computer Science and Engineering interned with Microsoft and got a Pre Placement Offer (PPO) says that –
To a get a good internship, the best thing is to stay updated. You have to mail your CV, area of interest etc. to different institutes and professors and when you get in touch with them you stand a good chance. Also, there is the class room study. It is very important for to follow the lectures. As for myself, I concentrated on Data Structures and Algorithm the most. But after that I surfed the internet for different articles based on Computer Science field and solved piles of question papers. I kept myself updated about things and kept my eyes and ears open. Also there is no need to worry while applying for foreign internships, as you are going to get a decent stipend that will compensate the stay and other expenditures.
Internship statistics: – The College has a compulsory 8 week internship schedule and all the students have to undergo internship/training during the summer before their final year. In the 2011-2012 batch all the 520 students secured internships in very reputed organizations. 15 students interned in various universities in foreign countries (8 students went to Germany through DAAD, 2 students to the United States of America, 1 student went to Canada, 2 students went to Singapore and 2 students went to Bangkok).
The average stipend offered to the students was in the range of 8k-25k per month. As the cost of living in Germany in comparatively higher than most places the, DAAD students received a stipend of 1935 Euros.
The PPOs offered for the 2011-12 session were:
1) Microsoft IT: 2 students
2) Goldman Sachs: 2 students
3) TATA Steel: 3 students
The most unique internship: – Ismail Sheikh bagged a two-month internship with Carnegie Melon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States of America. He was one of the very few who get such an opportunity. Ismail describes his internship as being the most wonderful experience and really worth it.
The internship gave me an insight into my interests and career. The research environment, passion to solve problems, collaboration with different people, and the Professor being as much excited as you in your research work; I couldn’t have asked for a better place to intern at. It was a phase when I realized the value of time and developed great respect towards it. It’s more of smart work rather than hard work.
Internship culture: – Here is what Samik Ghosal, the Joint Secretary (Placement Committee) at NIT Rourkela has to say about the internship culture in his college –
Industrial exposure and research experience in top universities helps students apply whatever they have learnt in theory and have a chance to learn a lot more than what their four-year engineering study teaches them. The best part about the summer internships is that you get to figure out where your actual interest lies and what you would want to do in future.
The exceptional internships bagged by students in recognized institutes and industrial establishments is a testament to the commitment and perseverance of both, the students and the faculty of the college. Needless to mention that the internship scenario at NIT Rourkela is one of the finest in the country.
