Internship at Swechha – Ananya from Lady Irwin College, DU
Working with and for honest people of the country, is the pride that everyone wants to experience. Ananya (second from left in black T) chooses to work for the welfare of people and was awestruck by seeing the lower sections of the country. Thus, she was motivated to bring the change that she wishes to see around.
In the summer of 2013 in my 2nd year of graduation I decided to chuck the usual routine of lazing around at home all day and do something productive. I started searching for job volunteering and internship opportunities on the web. After checking the profiles of many organisations for hours, I stumbled upon Swechha’s profile. It was an organisation that had it all, environment conservation, education initiatives, social policy etc. It was the office pictures that first drew me towards it. It was a completely green and eco-friendly workplace in Khirki Exchange in Saket, New Delhi. At once I sent them an email about wanting to be a part of their team. Soon enough I was called for an interview and 2 days later was hired by them.
I was ecstatic to start working at once. I was put on the team of their education department which at the time was doing an RTE (right to education) project in the slum next to their office. The interns’ job was to go and collect data about the status of education and family from the residents of the slum. For days, I and my teammates spent hours in the slum colony interacting with the residents, listening to their stories and gathering data.
Sometimes we used to read stories to children in the Kitabghar created by Swechha in the slum. It was a feeling of pure joy to watch the excited and vibrant young faces of those little learners waiting to explore the realm of imagination. Being close to the people of the slum and interacting with them gave me a sense of what hardships the underprivileged population of our county faces. They are deprived of basic right and resources and live in absolute poverty. The experience made me thankful for all that I possess and has also made me determined to try to change the condition of such people in our country. The internship was a great learning experience in all.
