Internships are usually the first opportunity for the leaders of tomorrow, to experience the world they will be facing — in blood and flesh. I joined HT City, an entertainment and lifestyle supplement with one of the major English dailies, Hindustan Times.
The month-long opportunity was in itself such a great internship to be proud of. Yet, nervousness seeps in through the thinnest of spaces, mine came through the crack of being a first hands-on experience of journalism. The established notion of an Editor was set deep in my mind, collected carefully from the seniors in the field. And then I saw Spiderman. What if I too land up in a Daily Bugle kind of space? Will my editor shout at me? Would I be able to do justice to my work? With so many questions, I was sure to give easy competition to O’Brien Sir. It passed and so did I.
I was soon sitting at my desk, holding a keyboard, absorbing the new faces, the new place, the new job, and somewhere getting to know the new me. I was lucky to have had supportive mentors, who helped me with their guidance all through the while I kept feeling different assignments to cover. And the sheer feeling of having your byline in a newspaper, that too in a widely-read one is truly tremendous. Which was followed by star-interviews, page one news, multiple-editions pieces and so on. All this was something to cheer about, to scream happily about.
A large part of the jubilation was because my family was happy. I was glad, and I still am, that I could do something valuable which my family could be happy and proud of. They were the first people to believe in me, when I decided to shift my focus from engineering to humanities, and so they deserved it all. All in all my first internship was a complete package which offered me the knowledge and experience to help me take this path with much more confidence. I am well-prepared now to strike the hammer. Only looking for more chances to heat up the iron!
