Summer Internship with NDA — Manoj from Tata Institute of Social Sciences
Wildcard entry for: – 31st August 2012
Name of the intern: – Manoj Kumar
Institute: – Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai
Organization interned with: – NDA
It all started at 4 A.M.
He was juggled from one room to another
Like a ball
Or like a bottle
Though suited-booted
With hands, legs and a face
Each room, hunters waiting for him
Eating, drinking, flaunting, competitive hunters
Some calm and composed, while some aggressive
Discussions- IPL, survival game, forest, ships
No where related, but called process
Selected ones went for interview rounds
He gave interviews, some good ones and some bad
While others were getting selected one by one
There were people like him, not hunted by anyone
And time passed by, but to no good: it was 8 PM now
Finally he was killed and sold
He was sold for Rs. 2860 per kg for two months
Those two months were still five months away
Yes, he was sold to an IT organization
With a dream stipend he dreamt of
It was the best movie of his life
In the fourteen hours of selection, he saw every emotion possible
Happiness, tears, anger, frustration
It had its curves when it was at peak
And when it was slow, it kept him puzzled:
Why so rushed, where is the logic
It is recruitment or
Is it an animal fair?
Brains can only come up with such a no-brainer concept
Salute to the discoverer who must be an HR! The day ended and
Five months later
It started with a one day orientation program in Mumbai
Where he learnt about the business
And how this is the best organization he can dream of
HR came, sales came and came the pizzas
Equipped with laptops, data cards and other details
He was sent to Bangalore — Bangalore was beautiful
And the organization’s campus was just superb
23 acres, lush green, 50+ bird species, zero waste
Lovable, adorable, soothing it was to his heart and soul
A cubicle was made his den for the next two months
And he met two bosses — North and South
North was stern and ruling, and did not like him at all
Because he was honest to put his opinion
This according to North was not the corporate way
To put things across the table
He hated the openness and so said fake open-door policy
He wondered about theory in practice and theory in use
South was the boss to look for, a fatherly figure
Lucky enough, South was his project guide
South headed recruitment, and so he became a part of a wonderful team
Called “The Recruiters”
A fun loving, caring and energetic team.
Looking for a quality project,
He got a project on “quality of hire”
An upcoming concept in HR analytics and strategic HR.
A new concept, not explored much
A challenge and an opportunity is what he saw
To explore the concept, he read a lot
He talked across organizations, across borders and across industries
He made surveys, came up with a model
Ran trial runs and did number crunching
Suggested recommendations and made a final presentation
Finally, awarded certificate of exemplary work
Yes, he enjoyed the work, enjoyed the life
He learnt from people around
And learnt from South whose experience was like gold
And he heard carefully to learn the tricks of the trade
Apart from work, he was part of movie making, dance sessions, obvious parties and SPL
Yes, he was sold for Rs. 1200 for this IPL based cricket game
So less this time, but fun it was
Fun, friends and future: he got all three F’s there
Luckily enough, the ball which was juggled
In the roulette of recruitment
Landed into a safe place
Smile, smile and smile
And it will be 4 AM when it will all start again.
Good luck, bad luck this time, who knows? –
He, him and himself :)
Note — He got a stipend of Rs. 1L per month for two months and he weighed 70 kg. Hence approx. Rs. 2860 per kg.
