Summer Internship with Meteorological Department Delhi – Himanshi from HIT
Daily Winner for: – 9th August 2011
Name of the intern: – Himanshi
Institute: – Hindustan Institute Of Technology, Greater Noida
Organization interned with: – India Meteorological Department Delhi
My internship was a really interesting one. I got the opportunity to work in a department which was totally different from my field- The Satellite Centre at IMD Delhi.
At first it looked like -what can a Computer Science student learn there? But as I learned more about it , it seemed very exciting. With restricted entry, the satellite center had big LCD screens everywhere showing live photos and data coming directly from different channels of kalpana satellite. The first thing that I used to do after reaching there in the morning was to predict the day’s weather on the basis of the data and tell it to all my friends.
My work was a simplified version of the research topic of my guide-to compare the data from KALPANA (ISRO’s meteorological satellite) nd NOAA (NASA’s meteorological satellite) and hence compare the health of kalpana. My work included making simple C programs on linux workstations that processed and filtered out the data which was given to us as received from ISRO. The programs included reading the files in hdf4 format and then storing values in a given range that were later used for the comparison.
The training included a presentation at the end in which I had to explain all that I learned about the satellites and the use of this research in front of the scientists of IMD.
With a lot of knowledge sharing a lot more fun, the training turned out to be a perfect one.
