Getting an internship for a small grade college student who does not have contacts in the companies or with the professors is very difficult. The same happened with me. I applied to all the IITs for Summer Research Intern but was rejected everywhere even though I have done work in my field (Robotics) before. I was quite disappointed because nobody was evaluating my knowledge and what I had done. Just because of the college name and with no recommendations I was not able to get any internship. Then once I thought why only IITs or big brand companies? The soul purpose of the internship is to learn and I should go to the place where I can learn more. The best way I found is to go to the start up companies there you can get the proper guidance as well as the work. So I started looking at the start up companies which is working in Robotics.
I was following a forum and there I came to know about a person Ibrahim Kamal who was the winner of International Robotics Competition RoboCon 2007. He started a small company in France. I thought of doing internship under his guidance. I just sent an email to him explaining what I have done and my wish of doing internship. After few days, I got the positive reply from his side. He took an interview and I was selected. That was one of the happiest ever moments for me.
It was very exciting for me as I was going to a foreign country for first time in my life. Finally I reached there and had a great welcome by my boss :) I experienced a different culture, different food style (I am a vegetarian but didn’t find veg food there), bad weather (temperature goes below – 20 degree in the night), and language problem (people in France didn’t know English and I didn’t know French ) but I managed and enjoyed it.
I spent 5 months there and learned a lot of things technical as well as cultural. I completed the project before time and then traveled to many places as I love traveling and exploring different places. Traveling in TGV (One of the fastest train in the world) was awesome and going to country side and exploring the nature was amazing. This was one of the best experience that I had at the end of my teenage. :)
