I used to travel 40 minutes in metro and 20 minutes walk to reach G.Ram Hospital. I interned under the clinical psychologist. On my first day I wore the proud jacket and entered the hospital premises. My first day as an intern was also my first day to travel alone in metro. Oh, how much I loved that hustle. I was mesmerized by the feeling of individuality. I, a shy, introvert & homely girl, was actually out, alone and making sense of routes despite my bad cognitive maps.
While entering the premises of hospital, everything amused me. The timeless waiting, the scared look, crowded people and their over-fat bags, everyone and everything inside a hospital has an identity of its own. My internship was simple: learn to observe people. In the beginning, I was happy with what I had. I, along with other interns, was strictly told not to make the clients (the word ‘patient’ is not good) or their parents aware that we are observing them. Every day for 2 hours I used to see parents struggle with their children over some ‘missing desired behavior’. They listened to what senior interns told them while brushing their hands on their son’s/daughter’s head.
When the child used to run from one place to another, squeaking with joy, it was hard for me to see a flawed deviant behavior. I used to fight with myself over this. But when symptoms presented themselves in a platter,I had to agree. It was a difficult time for the psychologist in me to grow. Yes, reading and learning from books is very easy. But actually implementing that in our life is a task in itself. I, unfortunately, had to leave before time . But I wish to go back again.
It was a memorable time for me. The hours, even limited, spent there will always be there with me.
