I got the opportunity to do my internship at IMRB through one of my college seniors. As I have made up my mind to pursue a career in marketing, I was very excited to do my summer internship at a place like IMRB. I was on cloud nine when I got the opportunity.
With butterflies in stomach, I joined IMRB Bangalore division on a fine Monday afternoon. To my surprise, most of the people working there were very accommodating which was comforting. My team head was young and down to earth. The whole environment was very friendly and cozy. The first day was fine and was not as intimidating as I thought but the rest didn’t go that well.
My first meeting with the group director was to discuss “About me” i.e. my strengths, weaknesses and skills. The meeting was a total disaster. The director was totally disappointed with me and asked me “Indu! Tell me, why shouldn’t I send you back?” That single question explains it all. I was totally embarrassed and wanted to pack home. But I am never give up things that easily. My senior was also present at the meeting. She was the one who helped me in getting the internship there. I didn’t want to let her down. I had the hope that I can prove myself. Then I never looked back.
I started working very hard beyond my limits. Sometimes I worked for even 12 to 13 hours. Apart from my own project, I was also working on the projects of IMRB. I tried to be as efficient as I could be in my work. Though I did few mistakes, my team head was very understanding and constantly motivated me throughout the project.
My project was about customer expectations in Bangalore multiplexes. Bangalore was a new place to me. Except for my college tour, I haven’t been to this place and I felt left all alone there. It was an uphill task for me to get interviews from the customers and the multiplex managers. Nonetheless, I was determined to do my best and nothing could stop me. With no previous appointments or introduction, I walked into the multiplexes and managed to get the interviews of the managers. I traveled a lot and met lots of people for my project. The experience was for lifetime.
The most memorable part of my internship was the people I met inside and outside IMRB. I made lot of friends during the two months. They made my days there wonderful. They helped me get accustomed to the corporate set up and the cosmopolitan culture. I enjoyed the team lunches and the outings that we went to. At the end of my project I became one among them at IMRB.
The final day came and I presented my project before the group director. The presentation went for 2 hours. He gave many suggestions to fine tune my findings. In the end, he told me that no summer intern there so far had done such an extensive research. Then he turned to my senior and said, “We must give her a PPO”.
