The view outside the sealed window was still dark and I had no other option than to rest my head on the seat. I closed my eyes and let the hypnotic rhythm of the jet engine cradle me to sleep. As if someone had pressed the rewind button, thoughts started to fill my mind about how it all happened..

The group discussions, the interviews and the moment when they told I was selected.. Those images started to appear. It is always special when someone recognizes your talents and gives you an opportunity. It is a common misconception that companies tend to hire students with high grades as compared to the others. But the truth always has been to hire people who fit best for the post and share common ideologies with the firm.

I am a Mechanical Engineering student and contrary to the stereotypes I don’t like to get my hands dirty, literally. I’ve always preferred a white collar job for reasons unknown. Maybe I just consider them to be cool. What more can I wish for? The company where I interned is a leading licencor and supplier of technologies and the thing that matters is that I get to sit and work in an office.

I was one of the two students selected from my college and we set out together to the city called DLF (some people still use the word GURGAON though). I’d heard that the cost of living in NCR is a bit on the higher side, but I was completely shocked to find out that I had to pay 10K per month for a room which was smaller than the cabin space of my car! And courtesy these exorbitant costs, all my plans about how to spend my stipend of 20K per month went down the drain.

First day of internship, both of us stepped inside building 9B in DLF Cybercity. As I adjusted my collar, I imagined ourselves to be Harvey Specter and Mike Ross from “SUITS” entering their office in Wall Street (background music included)! I also imagined the office to be as spectacular as the one in the same TV show and I was not disappointed. The doors opened on to a striking reception with the company’s name neatly embossed over a smooth piece of granite. The yellow lighting along with the cozy interiors was something you don’t generally expect in an office. The workplaces were modern and were surrounded by huge glass-paneled windows which allowed natural light to enter as well as offered an excellent view of the city. We were joined by three other interns and were given a tour of the premises. I carefully noted down the bearings of the two most crucial things to work in an office: the coffee machine and the ping-pong table.

And then it happened. We were directed to the places where we sit and before me I saw an elegant looking cubicle. It already had my name printed on it and I was amazed. My very own cubicle with my very own desktop and my very own intercom! Weeks passed and work started to pour in. I did some serious mechanical design engineering and also attended weekly meetings and reviews. My internship ended with a presentation and a report. At the end of the day, I got used to the work culture and I enumerate some of thing which might be useful for you:
• Facebook and YouTube are blocked inside the office (you may however access YouTube Education though)
• Never play with the intercom (you never know who is listening on the other side)
• Don’t hesitate of send liberal doses of emails (they really matter)
• Go early in the evening to catch a ping-pong table
• Develop healthy relationship with the waiter in the cafeteria (trust me, it really helps)
• Do some work as well; there will be a 1 hour presentation at the end.

The turbulence outside caused the aircraft to shake slightly thereby disturbing my flow of thoughts. I glanced back at the window again and this time it was not pitch black. I could clearly make out the dazzling view of a city, the city to which I belong, a city named Chennai.
