Tips and tricks to secure a job right after graduation
‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..’ – these lines by Charles Dickens aptly define our college lives. From mass bunks and late-night Maggi meals to burning the midnight oil to prepare for semester exams – college stint houses it all, and amid all the crazy fun awaits the monster infamously known as campus placements. What if we shared a sure shot way to tame this monster! And oh, you don’t have to worry about the irony of having 5 years of experience before your first job – we have a secret solution for that as well. Exciting, isn’t it? Let’s find out how you can ace this placement season.
How to kickstart your preparation?
1. Building Resume: If placement season is your battleground, your resume is the sharpest arrow in your quiver. Your resume is a lot like your Tinder bio – you mention what makes you stand out from the crowd and why you would be a perfect match for the organization. The only differences are that you don’t lie in your resume and it needs to be customized for different job requirements. The most important thing to keep in mind while writing a resume is to mention all your skills and work experiences, and if you don’t have any experiences so far, don’t fret! Here is a way to show your hobbies and participation in extra co-curricular activities as work experience.
2. Brushing your basics: If you’re applying for a profile that is closely related to what you’ve studied, it’s imperative that you brush up all you’ve learnt in your college. Not only do the domain-specific questions help the employer in understanding how aware you are of the field but they also show how sincere you were as a student. Quora, Geeks for Geeks, Glassdoor, and IndiaBix are a few resources where you can find subject-specific interview questions.
3. Researching about the companies: You will spend one-third of your day in the organisation you are hired at which is why it is important for you to research about it and ensure that the profile and culture align with your needs. Trust me, you’d prefer being wrong about your wedding dress than being wrong about choosing a company to work at any day! Brief research about the company will also help you understand the expectations of the organisation and how the company will help you grow as a professional. And guess what, it’ll also come in handy when you have to answer ‘Why do you want to work with us?’ and ‘Do you have any questions for us?’.
4. Nailing the interview: You’ve already won half the battle by getting shortlisted for an interview round but this is the more crucial part of the process. An interview aims at checking a candidate’s interest in working with the organization and the ideas or insights she can bring to the table. Prepare answers for the commonly asked interview questions but make sure you don’t recite a template answer. Your answers should give a clear view of your skills and interests along with your passion for the job.
