The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program (UTRIP) – Natural Sciences – Tokyo, Japan
The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program (UTRIP) is a summer internship program for students majoring in natural science and other relevant fields. These include six departments: Physics, Astronomy, Earth & Planetary Science, Chemistry, Biophysics & Biochemistry, and Biological Sciences.The program will provide students with an opportunity to gain the experience of “real graduate-school life” or “research-centered life.” UTRIP is a gateway to pursuing an advanced degree and experiencing academic life at Todai. The program will be a good trial for students to test their aptitude for rigorous graduate study in the natural sciences. This is an all expense paid internship program and the last date to apply is 1st March, 2013 – hurry!
About University of Tokyo: – The University of Tokyo (known as TODAI in Japan) is the oldest and the most prestigious university in Japan, and it receives by far the biggest direct government grant (approx. 2.5 billion USD). The university has five campuses, of which two (Hongo and Komaba campuses) are in the heart of Tokyo. The Graduate School of Science is located in the Hongo campus. TODAI has been designated as a “center of excellence” by the Japanese Ministry of Education and Science (MEXT). The University is striving to raise its international profile by attracting overseas students and researchers in response to MEXT’s objective to enhance internationalization.
About Internship: – Participating students will closely work with leading researchers of the Graduate School of Science (GSS) at Todai. In addition to an opportunity for an outstanding scientific research work experience, the program includes off-campus activities such as a field-trip to a World-Heritage site in Japan, and social and cultural events to promote a better understanding of Japanese culture and build a good relationship with current students at Todai. Lectures on cross-disciplinary scientific areas are also part of the program. At the conclusion of the program, students are required to make an oral presentation and submit a report on the research project.
Who can apply: –
- Be currently enrolled in the junior or senior year of a Bachelor program in a four-year education system, or the equivalent year at the time of application. Graduating seniors may also apply.
- Be enrolled in the natural science or other relevant fields.
- Be thinking of pursuing long-term career goals in a scientific area.
- Be available to carry out a research project for six consecutive weeks on a full-time basis.
- Be able to present coverage of a health insurance plan that is effective during the internship program before arriving in Japan.
Location: –Tokyo, Japan
Duration: –6 weeks (2 batches; 10th June – 19th July 2013, and 1st July – 9th August 2013)
Stipend: – UTRIP participants will receive financial support from the Graduate School of Science to cover their costs and expenses in two forms: The Graduate School of Science (GSS) Scholarship for UTRIP-Related Expenses, and the Daiwa Securities Group Inc. Scholarship for the University of Tokyo Summer Internship Program Participants. Please note that the latter scholarship is only provided to a student who is currently enrolled in one of the universities preliminarily designated by the sponsor (Daiwa Securities Group Inc..
