Content Writing internship at Gonoise – Pallavi’s journey of finding her true passion
About the Author: Pallavi Mukherjee (girl in the front in blue denim shirt) from VIT University shares how she finally found her true passion and made a career switch through an internship.
My story begins after I graduated from school. I was an average student all my school life but in 12th standard, I fell in love with chemistry. I had never felt such passion for the subject till then but in retrospect, I guess we humans tend not to pay attention to the things that come naturally to us.
After 12th, I pursued Bachelors in Chemistry from Delhi University. After the first semester, I realized that I was one of the top students in class and other students would look at me the way I looked at the toppers in my school. This new found love for Chemistry became a source of joy and pride for me. The confidence that I had lacked in school, I gained it in college. Three years of my college life went by quickly, and I decided to pursue Masters. After a year drop due to some personal issues at home, I joined VIT to tread onto my dream lane.
All this while, I would write. I would write memoirs to express myself. I am emotional but I tend to keep it private; however, there are times when you need to let it out of your system and writing is an excellent medium to do so. I thrive when I write. I have been writing journals since 7th grade. As I grew up, I even started writing short stories. During my masters, I started freelancing as a content writer and in those few months, a twist came in my destiny. I felt suffocated and slowly realized that the expiration date of my journey with chemistry was coming closer. I had built my entire career around chemistry and didn’t know what else to do with my life. As I wanted to pursue PhD. in Physical Chemistry, I had also interned at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai and at FRI, Dehradun but to suddenly feel indifferent towards the very thing you build your life on just shook me from within.
As my postgraduation was coming to an end, an alchemy of events was threading side by side. I finally reached a point where I knew what I wanted to do if I really wanted to make a career switch. This strange feeling of rebuilding my life scared me but I knew that I had to do it. I decided to become a copywriter. The moment I completed my Masters, I came back to Delhi and started applying for internships via Internshala. I got a call from Gonoise and Hindu Post. I had applied to both these companies via Internshala and they seemed to like my profile. I was called for an interview at Gonoise and after 2 rounds of interview, I was selected as the trainee content writer.
When I first went to their office for the interview, I absolutely adored the photo frames containing inspiring thoughts that filled the walls. The HR asked me a few questions about my educational background, the sudden shift from Science to writing, and where I put up. The interviewer came in after a few minutes. He introduced himself as the digital marketing manager and asked me to show what all work I had done so far. I was carrying my pen drive and showed him some of my memoir, short fictional stories, and my freelance work. After scrutinizing my work he asked me to write a blog on how to sell one of the photo frames with an inspiring caption as a premium product. I wrote a blog of about 200 words which he seemed to like. He asked me a few more questions like writing a copy both in Hindi and English. He also wanted to know if I had checked their website online and asked to point out a few mistakes. I had gone through their website thoroughly before the interview and so I was able to do that. They scheduled another round of interview for the next day.
Next day, he asked me to write a blog on a beard-themed mobile case (one of the products they sell) and told me that I had full access to internet and websites, but I had to mention the blogs and related websites that I would use to write. I started researching online and drafted the blog within the allocated time. Looking at his expression, I knew that he liked my blog.
I started my 6-months internship at Gonoise on June 13th, 2016. It is my third month and I’m really enjoying the new phase of my career. I work under the digital marketing team and I’m responsible for the content – both internal and external. I enjoy playing with words and I’m thankful that I got this opportunity to blend words with creativity and create magic on social media. In these past 3 months, I have come a long way. The fear that I had of changing my career tracks has been wiped away because of this internship. I have learned a lot here in terms of content writing for social media, writing blogs and articles, drafting e-mails, communicating with our customers, providing product names and description, and getting used to corporate life.
This internship has provided me a peek into my future and I’m really enjoying it. I have also received a certificate from Internshala for being selected by Gonoise. This dream of shifting from one field to another would not have been possible without Internshala. This internship is one of the best things that has ever happened to me.
