Perseverance pays off : How Bhaskar turned around his career
About the Author: Bhaskar Kashyap from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysuru, shares how a project helped him get an internship opportunity at IMPROWEA Business Solutions Private Ltd., which eventually turned into a full-time job.
It was on 4th of July 2016 that I passed out as an MCA graduate by securing 7.87 GPA. Neither did I have any in-hand-offer, nor had I done any internships during the course.
During the 5th semester of MCA, just like the others, I started preparing for placements. Unfortunately, I missed most of the opportunities due to the cut-off criteria which were set by the companies, as my performance in 12th std. was poor. Still, I felt I was lucky enough to appear for the recruitment process of 3 mass-recruiting, 4 medium-recruiting & 2 start-up companies. However, to my dismay, I wasn’t even able to clear one! I decided not to waste any more time and focus on completing my semester by attending classes regularly. And so, I did the same and completed my 5th semester with all these disappointments and tensions hovering over my head.
The next semester started and once again, with new hopes and zeal, I started searching for good internships, where I could learn and submit one good project as my final semester requirement. At that time, I wasn’t aware of the Internshala portal. Yet, I put my sincere efforts in finding a good opportunity. I was about to reach my deadline to notify the college authorities whether I had decided to do an internship or make a project on my own.
As I couldn’t get an internship as per my plans, I started working on a project on the Internet of things (IoT). I made a Wireless E-notice Board using Arduino microcontroller, which was a hit! The entire topic was new to me and it required background knowledge of electronics. And that’s where, I got good support and encouragement from the whole college staff, my friends, and family due to which I was able to manage it well. This is where my new journey started.
After my sixth semester results, I kept updating my resumes, deactivated my Facebook account, deleted all my virtual world links (except Gmail), and created my profile at LinkedIn (where I connected to some great networks). And at those tough & crucial junctures, faced not just by me, but also by thousands of candidates like me who roam the streets of Bengaluru just to attend an interview (reasons for rejection could be plenty – unable to clear the eligibility criteria, no internship experience, bad luck, etc.), Internshala provides a platform that helps.
On 19th October 2016, I was selected as an intern at Improwea Business Solutions Private Limited as a PLM Trainee (Product Lifecycle Management Trainee) for a period of 6 months. The interview process was very simple – a technical round along with a focus on the company’s profile and a coding round. I joined my office along with another candidate. The initial days passed quickly, as our Team Leader trained us in the PLM Domain (ENOVIA’s – Java API with some examples). Meanwhile, during lunch time, our colleagues told us that we were the first batch from a portal like Internshala for their company and now, for this year as well, they are hiring via Internshala.
Doing an internship, sounded a bit awkward to my parents, some of my friends, and relatives because according to them, no one does an internship after graduating from college. They might have had a valid point, but not in my case, as for me it was a gateway, in fact, a golden opportunity to chase my dreams.
I would like to thank my employer here, for understanding the position of a candidate like me, giving me a chance to work (which was boosted with challenges) and also for giving me a chance to work on various live projects. And of course, I’d also like to commend the senior employees who encouraged us throughout the duration of the internship.
And now, since June 2017, I’ve been working as a full-time employee for the same company as a PLM Developer.
