Summer Internship in Mumbai/ Delhi – Social Councilor – Koshish
There are large numbers of beggars in India who are forced in to begging because our societies fail in providing any good alternative to them. This section of society is neglected by most of us. When we give money to the beggar, do we think is it sufficient for him to buy even one time meal? Can we think of some alternative options which will help him to be self sustainable and live his life with respect? About Koshish: – Koshish (www.tariqueforkoshish.wordpress.com) is a field action Project of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, working on the issue of homelessness and destitution. This project aims at preventing the criminalization of poverty and destitution that happens in the form of anti-beggary legislation. Under the law, beggary is punishable offense, where unfortunately, aged and abandoned, disabled, persons with mental illness and women who are victims of abuse and violence, among other groups, get processed.
Koshish works primarily from the custodial institutions named Beggar’s Home, established under the Beggary Prevention Legislation. These are the institutions run by state government where people charged with and arrested for Begging are detained. Koshish focuses on providing the legal aid, tracing and connecting them with their families, medical assistance, vocational training, assistance with employment opportunities, getting the legal entitlements, restoration etc. At present, Koshish works in Mumbai and Delhi.
About Internship: – Interns would be involved in all major activities of the project. They would get an opportunity to work with the Criminal Justice system including Police and Judiciary along with the government departments. Broadly, candidates would be involved in counselling, preparing Social Investigation Reports for the courts, tracing the families of the clients, networking with organizations from other states, facilitating the vocational training inside the institutions, documentation, research based work, Nights Outs and recreational program.

Who can apply: – Graduates from any stream/ students presently doing masters/ preferably Social Work, Media, Law. Good Communication and documentation skills must. Students should be comfortable with Hindi and English.
Location: – Delhi & Mumbai, India
Duration: – Minimum 1 month
Start date: – ASAP
Stipend: – Appreciation Certificate on completion of the internship period shall be given. Letter of Recommendation can also be provided. A nominal support towards actual travel expenses would be provided to the interns.
